Overcoming Imposter Syndrome as a Scale-Up Entrepreneur

Tom started his tech company with just a laptop and a great idea. Five years later, his business had grown to fifty employees and millions in revenue. But, despite his success, Tom couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t smart or capable enough. Every day, he feared that his employees and investors would realize he was just winging it.

This overwhelming feeling of self-doubt led him to work excessively, often staying at the office long after everyone else had left. He meticulously reviewed every minor detail of his business, afraid that missing something would expose his perceived incompetence. His weekends were spent buried in work, leaving little time for family and friends. Despite his success, Tom felt more like an imposter than a CEO.

Does this story resonate with you? From countless conversations that we’ve had with BEN entrepreneurs and even BEN advisors, we know that Tom’s story is a familiar one. Imposter syndrome - the persistent feeling that you're not truly deserving of your success - affects even the most accomplished individuals.

Here are some strategies to help you overcome imposter syndrome next time you feel doubt creeping in.

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

Recognize that imposter syndrome is a common experience, especially among high achievers. Acknowledging your feelings is the first step towards overcoming them. Understand that doubting your capabilities doesn't make you any less competent - it makes you human.

2. Celebrate Your Achievements

Take the time to reflect on your accomplishments, both big and small. Keeping a success journal can help you remind yourself of your achievements and the hard work you’ve put in. Remembering these accomplishments will reinforce your ability to succeed through challenges and help you see practical evidence that you are far more capable than you give yourself credit for, you did earn your place, and you deserve to be exactly where you are as a founder/CEO.

3. Seek Support

Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, BEN Advisors, peers, and friends. Sharing your feelings with others can provide reassurance and new perspectives. Often, you’ll find that those you admire have faced similar doubts. A pep talk from someone who’s been there or knows you well just might be exactly what you need!

4. Focus on Growth, Not Perfection

Perfectionism can fuel imposter syndrome. Instead of striving for perfection in everything you do, focus on continuous improvement and learning. Understand that mistakes are part of the growth process and that each setback is an opportunity to learn and improve. When mistakes happen, take them at face value without allowing yourself to come to any unnecessary conclusions that aren’t there. For example, making a mistake doesn’t mean you need to question your abilities altogether.

5. Challenge Negative Self-Talk

Pay attention to your inner dialogue. When you catch yourself thinking negatively, challenge those thoughts with evidence of your capabilities and achievements. Replace self-doubt with affirmations that reinforce your competence and value. This is another time when a quick look at your success journal can help you almost instantaneously.

6. Focus on Continuous Education

Knowledge is a powerful way to combat imposter syndrome. Continuously educate yourself about your industry, ideal client base, and business operations. The more informed you are, the more confident you’ll feel in your decisions and capabilities.

7. Practice Self-Compassion

Be kind to yourself. Breaking yourself down is only going to lead a spiral that is much more difficult to end. Recognize that everyone has moments of doubt and that self-compassion is crucial for mental resilience. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend in a similar situation.

8. Remember Your Purpose

Remind yourself why you started your entrepreneurial journey in the first place. Connecting with your passion and purpose can help ground you during moments of doubt and reinforce your commitment to your business. You didn’t get your business to where it is today by accident, you did it with passion, intention, and strategic decisions.

Overcoming imposter syndrome doesn’t happen overnight, but with self-awareness and the right strategies, you can build the confidence to fully embrace your role as a successful scale-up entrepreneur. Remember, you’ve earned your place, and your unique vision and capabilities are what drive your business forward.
